Merzouga lies southwest of Rissani, right next to Erg Chebbi, giving the place a unique atmosphere due to its proximity to the towering dunes.
In the past, most inhabitants near Erg Chebbi were nomads, living in tents and traveling in caravans through the Sahara for trade. However, when borders were drawn between the countries sharing the Sahara, the trade ceased.
Climate change also influenced the nomads’ way of life. As the land became drier, rivers and lakes dried up, and the grass disappeared, leaving a barren landscape unsuitable for grazing animals. Fortunately, the favorable water conditions in Merzouga allowed the nomads to adapt to a new way of life. Date palms were planted in the oases, small-scale agriculture developed, and since the 1970s, tourists began coming to Merzouga.

Today, Merzouga is a well-known destination on Morocco’s tourist map.

So let’s set off together on your “excursion to the dunes”!
